At the end of last year, the London Symphony Orchestra recorded Final Fantasy Symphony, an album with arrangements from Final Fantasy VI, VII and X. The album release, that will be at first only in digital format with X5 Music Group distribution, was promised for the beginning of 2015. But the release date was already revealed: February 23rd, in a week from today.
Taking advantage of the occasion, I bring an interview with the producer of this concert and responsible for Merregnon Studios, Thomas Boecker, that produces game concerts since 2003. He is known for various pioneering in that area, like First Symphonic Game Music Concert (2003), the first game concert released outside of Japan; Symphonic Shades (2008), the first game concert with radio live transmission; and, more notoriously, Symphonic Fantasies (2009), the first game concert with live video transmission. Just to name a few.
Besides the production of Symphonic Game Music Concert series in Leipzig (2003-2007) and the tetralogy Symphonic Shades, Fantasies, Legends and Odysseys in Cologne (2008-2011), Boecker was the coordinator of the albums Vielen Dank (2007) and drammatica (2008) and consultant of the world tours Play! A Video Game Symphony (2006 to 2007) and Distant Worlds: music from Final Fantasy (2007 to 2011).
Since 2008 I have exchanged e-mails with Boecker, that surprised me in that occasion when he said to me that he reads Hadouken – after all, the blog posts are written in Portuguese. I feel that I should have done this interview previously, but the moment has come.
In the interview, I preferred to focus on specific curiosities about the concerts, which helps to show how is laborious to create concerts with new arrangements, but is very rewarding.
